R.E.T. Fix for IE7

This page is no longer applicable.

UPDATE: It appears that IE 7 will now work with the E-Learning network.
Hooray! However, if you have any problems with this you will need to contact the United Help Desk.

We offer no technical support for this fix---it's one of those tidbits we discovered late at night while your children slept and all was quiet on the prairie. Also: United Airlines official policy excludes support of Windows Vista and IE7---so keep that in mind also. Yeah, we think that is as silly as ______________. (insert colorful metaphor here)

The Problem

If you have upgraded to Internet Explorer 7.0 or purchased a new computer with Internet Explorer 7.0 already installed, you probably know the sad truth that it will not allow you to take the R.E.T. Prework.

Actually, the R.E.T. Prework and SkyNet will not allow IE7 to function properly, but that's another story for another web page for another day. In the meantime, if you do have IE7, and want to take the R.E.T. Prework, then download and this fix below.

Disclaimer

This fix is not guaranteed to work for everyone. Please use at your own caution. It will not work on Macs. It's designed for PC's only. This fix involves making a automated modification to the Windows Registry (what is this?) that controls your web browser's broadcast identification settings. Make sure to back up the registry before you modify it. Make sure that you know how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up, restore, and modify the registry, see this article.

The Fix

  • Download the (beta) IE7 Fix for R.E.T. Prework >

How it works

Both of these files will make changes to your Windows Registry (what is this?) that control your web browser's broadcast identification settings.

Whenever Internet Explorer visits a web site, it automatically identifies itself, including what version it is. SkyNet is programmed to reject any web browser that identifies itself as IE7. Therefore, this fix simply makes IE7 identify itself as IE6 to fool SkyNet.

Again, make sure to back up the registry before you modify it. Make sure that you know how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up, restore, and modify the registry, see this article. If you fail to do so, you run the risk of losing data and/or being unable to restore your computer in the event that this fix causes a problem.
