AOL FIX -- If All Else Fails

NOTE: If after doing any of the steps below, you get the message to "Modify, Repair or Remove" instead of the normal install prompts of "Typical or Custom", choose REMOVE. Then repeat the install.

The 2 most common problems encountered are problems with the automatic downloading/installing of the Sun JRE, and hanging at "Connecting to System A/B," without getting the Serurity Warning for Core Technologies, after the Sun JRE has been installed.

For the problems with the automatic download/install of the Sun JRE, start by checking the Add/Remove Programs to see if any previous versions of Java are listed, and if present having them uninstalled. Next, check the Downloaded Program Files for any Java, damaged, or unknowd files, and delete them. If the automatic download/install still fails, then use the manual "Offline installation" from the Sun Java web site.

To uninstall the Sun JRE:

  1. Click on START, (Windows 98, ME, 2000 select SETTINGS).
  2. Click on CONTROL PANEL.
  3. Double-click on JAVA PLUG-IN icon (Windows XP users may need to "Switch to Classic View").
  4. Double-click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
  5. Scroll through the list of programs and highlight Java 2 Runtime.
  6. Depending on your version of Windows, click Add/Remove (Win 9x, ME, 2000), or Change/Remove (Windows XP), and follow the uninstall prompts.
  7. Shut down and restart your computer.

To delete the Java Runtime file from the Downloaded Program Files:

  1. Click START.
  2. Select SETTINGS.
  3. Click on CONTROL PANEL.
  4. In the Control Panel double-click on INTERNET OPTIONS.
  5. In the Internet Properties Window, in the center where it says "Temporary Internet Files," click on the SETTINGS button.
  6. At the bottom click on VIEW OBJECTS.
  7. Click on the "Java Runtime Environment" file so it is highlighted.
  8. Go to the top, click on FILE, then click REMOVE PROGRAM FILE, click OK or YES to delete.
  9. Repeat steps 7. and 8. until Java files are deleted, as well as any files listed as "Unknown" or "Damaged."

Manual "Offline instructions" for the Sun JRE, right from Sun's web site.
You can also use Windows Offline installation to install the JRE. Offline installation contains all the files you need. Go to: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and click on Windows Offline Installation to download the file.

When prompted, please choose "Save" in the download dialog box, and save the download package in a convenient place (e.g. save on the desktop). Do NOT choose to "Open". Then double click on the downloaded installation file to start the installation process.
