How to Prevent AOL Pop-Up Ads

You are allowed (by AOL) to not only prevent all AOL pop-up advertising, but also to prevent them from sending you sales pitches via e-mail, regular mail, and offers over the telephone.  Here's what you need to do:

Note: These steps apply mostly to AOL 7.0 because I never bothered to obtain and use 8.0 and 9.0.  The only place I encounter the next version of AOL is in retail stores, where you could build the Great Pyramid of Giza from the stacks of AOL disks littered everywhere.

Start your AOL 7.0 program.  You will see the main screen where you can begin the sign-on process.  Go ahead and sign on to the service.  (You'll need your Internet connection of course)

Click the Settings tab at the top of the screen.  It's the 4th tab from the left.  From that drop down menu, select PREFERENCES.  You should now see a small 'Preferences' window in the middle of your screen.

Under the heading 'Account Controls', select MARKETING.  You will see a new screen with 5 little buttons on the right side.  It should look something like this:

AOL's Marketing Preferences screen

There are six purple buttons on the right side.  They allow you to prevent AOL ads sent via the following:

  • U.S. Mail From Other Organizations
  • U.S. Mail from AOL
  • Telephone
  • E-Mail
  • Pop-Up
  • Additional Information

The set of steps are the same for all of the six buttons.  We'll use Pop-Up as an example for the following steps:

Click the Pop-Up button (2nd from bottom).  A new window will appear.

Click Continue on that window.  Another window will appear.  Select "No, I don't want to receive special members-only pop-up offers".  Then click OK.

A gray confirmation message will appear stating, "Your Preference Has Been Set".  Click OK.

Then...click Cancel on the menu below it.  Make sure you click Cancel, because if you click 'Continue', you be back in the "No, I don't want to receive special members-only pop-up offers" window again.

You're all set.  Now repeat this process for each of the buttons shown in the screen above.  Don't forget to sign-off from AOL when you are finished with everything.
